Electric. Long haul. That used to sound like a mismatch. Not anymore. Volvo FH Aero Electric with extended range is designed for long-haul transportation. It has a lightweight e-axle, which allows for extra energy onboard and a range of up to 700 km. And with megawatt charging and a gross combination weight of up to 48 tonnes, you get great productivity as well.
Our electric trucks are fully capable of delivering the same performance that you’d expect from gas or diesel trucks, with the added benefits of zero tailpipe emissions, lower noise, and fewer vibrations. Discover which truck fits your needs, whether you work in city distribution, construction or long-haul transportation.
Currently electric trucks require a higher initial investment, but it’s important to look at the total cost of ownership. As emissions regulations continue to be enforced and sustainability goals guide customers business decisions, electric trucks are becoming more viable options. Plus, with lower long-term running costs and Volvo financing solutions that can be tailored to your unique needs, making the transition to electromobility is smoother than ever.

Using an AC charger with our medium-duty trucks, it takes around nine hours to fully charge the batteries. With a DC charger, having up to 350 kW of charging speed, you can charge batteries 20-80% of their capacity in 50 min. Using Megawatt Charging, with a charging speed up to 720 kW, batteries can be charged 20-80% in 36 min.
Initially we believe that most trucks will be charged at the customer’s home base overnight. As electric vehicles become more common, there will also be the need to charge them in many different places, such as loading bays, service workshops, truck stops and other places where trucks are parked.
Electric trucks produce zero CO₂ emissions, lower noise and vibration levels, and deliver fast, responsive acceleration. This enables transport in zero-emission zones and during restricted hours, while improving driver comfort and reducing environmental impact. With no exhaust fumes, goods can even be delivered indoors. As more transport buyers set ambitious zero-emission targets, offering electric transport can also create new business opportunities.
In general, to make the comparison it is necessary to look at the total cost of ownership. The shift to electric trucks means a higher initial investment for the transport company, followed by considerably lower running costs. Electric trucks often also offer new business opportunities as they can transport goods to locations and at times that are not possible with fossil-fuel trucks. A growing number of cities are introducing zero emission zones where only electric vehicles are permitted. The suitability of the solution must be analyzed together with the local customers. Also, we believe the initial investment will be reduced as the volumes increase and the cost of batteries decreases over time.
Our electric trucks meet the needs of many industries, from urban distribution and waste management to long and regional haul and construction. By 2026, customers in over 50 countries are using Volvo’s electric trucks and more than 250 million km have been covered. Over the many years we’ve been working with electrification, we’ve built a strong expertise in optimizing the use of installed energy, charging, and servicing of electric trucks.
Driven by increasingly strict client requirements, CEO Hans-Peter Dreier of Dreier Transport and Logistics, invested early in electric trucks, using them alongside rail transport for efficient, low-emission city deliveries. With 24 electric Volvo Trucks already in operation and plans to scale to 75 by 2026, Dreier sees the technology as proven, driver-friendly, and essential for winning tenders.
Raurica Wald adopted an electric truck to align with its CO₂-neutral business goals, using it to transport recycled wood biomass to a power plant in Basel. CEO Stephan Rüdlinger says the electric truck helped win contracts, offers comparable total cost of ownership to diesel with lower running costs, and is preferred by drivers for its quiet, powerful, low-vibration driving experience.
Millenaar & van Schaik Transport operates 18 electric Volvo tipper trucks on zero-emissions projects across the Netherlands. With reliable charging and up to 10–12 hours of quiet operation, demand now exceeds supply – making early investment a clear competitive advantage.
Shifting to electric trucks can feel like a big step. Our experts are on call to walk you through the process and guide you towards the right solutions.
