Continuous investment drives safety, efficiency and customer satisfaction

At Volvo Trucks, sustainability, health and safety, and operational efficiency are not separate priorities, but closely connected commitments that shape every aspect of the business.

The company’s long-term vision to deliver sustainable transport solutions commitment extends beyond the products themselves, with significant investment in modern dealership facilities, service networks and training programmes to ensure customers receive world-class support, enhanced workshop safety and the highest levels of operational efficiency throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

For this reason, Volvo Trucks South Africa recently invested in the installation of four state-of-the- art Stertil Koni Platform Skylifts at its Jet Park dealership – the first of its kind in the country.

The Stertil-Koni Skylifts are superior heavy duty platform lifts that uniquely provides a safe “clear floor” concept for technicians to work underneath and around trucks. It provides an open, unobstructed workspace without base frames, crossbeams or protruding columns under the chassis, making it easier and safer to manoeuvre tool carts, transmissions, and oil drains.

The primary drivers for the investment were increasing workshop productivity and thus customer uptime, as well as improving technician ergonomics and overall health and safety. It also aligns with the company’s broader goal of achieving zero accidents.

“The average time to carry out a service or repairs has reduced by 30% or more on a Skylift as opposed to a flat working bay,” said Haneef Laher, Regional General Manager at Volvo Trucks South Africa. “In real terms we can do an extra job per Skylift per day, vastly improving the turnaround and uptime for customers resulting in increased productivity.”

Skylifts have a high level of built-in and extensively tested safety features including the gear system which locks securely in the case of failure. The lifts’ adjustable height supports technicians of varying statures, and accessories like wheel lifters assist technicians to handle heavy components, benefiting a diverse workforce.

“Safety is built into Volvo Trucks’ brand heritage and is a central part of our identity. We are committed to creating safer working environments throughout the transport value chain, including in our workshops and service facilities,” explained Laher. “Through ongoing investment in dealership infrastructure, technician training, specialised workshop equipment and rigorous safety procedures, Volvo Trucks helps ensure that technicians can carry out maintenance and repairs efficiently while minimising workplace risks.”

Sustainability that creates value for our customers

In addition, Volvo Trucks has also recently completed several upgrades at its headoffice and dealership in Jet Park, which included solar carports for energy generation and the installation of backup water supply tanks.

“Sustainability is embedded not only in Volvo Trucks’ products and services, but also in the facilities that support customers every day,” explained Stuart Potter, MD of Volvo Trucks South Africa.

“Energy-efficient building designs, responsible resource management, improved waste handling practices and the adoption of advanced technologies help support lower emissions and more sustainable operations. These facilities are designed to meet the needs of a changing transport industry while providing customers with reliable service, enhanced uptime and a workshop environment that reflects Volvo Trucks’ commitment to long-term sustainability.”
