On Saturday, 22 June 2019, 15 of the country’s best drivers, represented by various Volvo fleet companies nationally, competed in the Volvo Trucks 2019 Driver Challenge. The event took place at Maropeng, in the Cradle of Humankind.

Thembelani Buso from Van der Vyver Vervoer, was crowned as the winner and has won himself and his manager, Ben du Toit, a unique Volvo experience to be hosted in Sweden later this year.

The second place went to Pinky Mancho from DSV and third position to Martin Mnyandu of Bigfoot Rentals.

During the evaluations, two identical Volvo FH 440s and trailer combinations were used to give each driver a fair chance to claim the top spot.

“The demanding route through Hekpoort included a number of challenges to test the competing drivers’ overall driving skills, including evaluations on productivity, safety and fuel efficiency,” said Malcolm Gush, Sales Director of Volvo Trucks Southern Africa.  “Competitors were tracked via Dynafleet, with judges putting drivers through several evaluations to determine the ultimate winner.”

On his trip to Sweden, Thembelani will visit the Volvo Trucks plant in Tuve, the Volvo Museum and the Volvo Trucks Experience Centre. There will also be opportunities to explore the city of Gothenburg and experience the culture that has very much shaped Volvo as a company and brand.

“We are very proud of the high level of skills present in all the participating Volvo Trucks fleet drivers.  We believe the Volvo Driver Challenge will continue to raise the bar to encourage safer and more efficient driving,” concluded Gush.
